Overcoming Obstacles to Pivot to Your Goals

One of the main reasons many people do not reach their goals is that they face an unexpected obstacle, and they don’t know how to handle it. They become overwhelmed and shut down and never reach their goal. They then become frustrated, upset, discouraged, and make excuses for not reaching their goals. It’s normal to feel frustrated, upset, etc., but you should never give up on accomplishing your goals.

There are three important things to remember when you are faced with an obstacle.

  1. Remember your Why: Why did you create the goal in the first place?
  2. Nothing comes easy: You must overcome your obstacles to reach your goals. Obstacles are part of the process. Think about a person who is running hurdles. The finish line is the person’s goal, but the hurdles are the obstacles. The runner must jump over the hurdles (obstacles) to make it to the finish line.
  3. Develop a New Strategy: If your current strategy doesn’t work, develop a new strategy to reach your goals.

It’s also important to have a plan when faced with obstacles. Remember obstacles are part of the process, so you must also plan for them. You may ask yourself well what is the plan?  The plan is – not to give up and if you need help, ask. If you need to find a different strategy to reach your goal, then develop a new strategy.

Stay positive when you are faced with an obstacle. Do not entertain negative thoughts. I REPEAT, do not entertain negative thoughts. We are human so negative thoughts will cross our minds, but we CANNOT ENTERTAIN THEM – meaning believing them or acting on them. When negative thoughts cross your mind remember your goals and envision your success.

Fear can also serve as an obstacle, but you must remember that Fear stands for False, Evidence, Appearing, Real. Remind yourself daily that God has not given you the spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. Maintain a winning mindset and envision yourself celebrating with your family and friends after you have accomplished your goal.

It’s important that you remember to surround yourself with people who will hold you accountable and will not allow you to succumb to obstacles but will push you to achieve your goals. Finally, remind yourself obstacles are part of the process giving up is not the solution when working to achieve your goals.
